Kanchibiya MP pushes for Zambia to move away from Maize as staple food

Member of Parliament for Kanchibiya Sunday Chanda is a pragmatic Member of Parliament who is part of a group of MPs who have submitted a private member’s motion to “urge Government to formulate an agricultural policy to minimize the dependency on maize as the main staple food.”

Posting on his X handle Chanda said “We must urgently address the maize-centric & mono-crop “approach” amidst climate change and food insecurity.”

Sunday Chilufya Chanda is a lawyer by profession who was elected Member of Parliament for Kanchibiya in 2021 under a PF ticket.

Chanda is one of the few vocal PF members of Parliament who are focused on development issues and not politics.

On the 25th of October 2023 in Parliament, Sunday Chanda moved a private members’ motion to urge Government to consider providing a 5-year tax holidays to companies engaged in waste recycling in order to enhance the fight against climate change.

Chanda is a regular face and voice in the Chambers of Parliament.
